Its name is Castorocauda. This name means "beaver tail." It lived during the Middle to Late Jurassic period. This was about 160 million years ago. It lived in a wet and cool place.

Castorocauda was a mammaliaform. This means it was a very early relative of mammals. It was the largest of its kind back then. It had a thick pelt of fur. This is the earliest known fur of any mammaliaform. The fur helped it stay warm in the cool water.

This animal was great at swimming. It had webbed feet to help it move. Its tail was flat and wide. It used its tail like a paddle to swim fast. Its teeth were also very special. They curved backward to hold onto slippery fish. This helped it eat its meals without losing them.

Castorocauda also liked to dig. It had strong arms for digging in the dirt. Scientists found its fossils in the Daohugou Beds. These fossils were so good that they even showed its hair.
