Eomaia had many parts like modern placental mammals. Placental mammals are a group of animals that give birth to more developed young. Eomaia had a special bone in its leg. This bone is called a malleolus. It is a small hammer-shaped part at the bottom of the shin bone. Eomaia also had certain teeth and jaw shapes.

But Eomaia was not a true placental mammal. It lacked some parts in its ankle. It also had a different set of teeth. It had five teeth on top and four on the bottom.

Eomaia had epipubic bones. These are bones that stick out from the pelvis, or hip area. They help make the body stiff when the animal moves. Scientists study these bones to learn how mammals changed over time. Some studies say Eomaia is a very early relative of placental mammals. Other studies say it is a different kind of stem animal.
