Its name means dawn horse. It lived in North America. Scientists found its bones in the ground. These bones date back to the Early Eocene.

Eohippus was a very small creature. It stood about 25 centimeters tall at the shoulder. That is about three hands tall. It had many toes on its feet. Each toe ended in a hoof. It had four toes on its front feet. It had three toes on its back feet.

Its teeth were very interesting. The teeth for grinding were like modern horses. These are called molars and premolars. But Eohippus also had large canine teeth. Canines are long, pointed teeth.

In 1876, Othniel C. Marsh described a skeleton. He called it Eohippus validus. Later, scientists found it was the same as another species. They named it Eohippus angustidens.

For a long time, people thought it was a Hyracotherium. Hyracotherium is a different group of animals. Now, we know Eohippus is its own group. It was a small member of the equid group. Equids are animals like horses.
