Castorocauda was a very special animal from a long time ago.

It was a mammaliaform, which is a group of creatures closely related to mammals. For a long time, people thought these early relatives stayed small and lived only on land. The discovery of Castorocauda changed that idea completely. It showed that these animals were actually moving into many different homes very early on. This animal lived in a wet and cool place with many seasons. It shared its world with salamanders, flying pterosaurs, and even birdlike dinosaurs.

This creature had many body parts that helped it live in the water.

Its name means "beaver tail" because its tail was wide and flat. It likely used this tail like a paddle to push itself through the water. Its feet had skin between the toes, which we call webbing. This helped it swim just like a modern platypus or an otter. The animal also had strong arms that were good for digging in the dirt. It might have even used its arms to help it row through the water.

Finding out how Castorocauda lived was a big job for scientists.

They found its fossils in the Daohugou Beds in Inner Mongolia, China. These fossils are very special because they are so well preserved. Scientists could see parts of its soft body and even its hair. This was the first time anyone saw fur on a mammaliaform. The fur helped the animal stay warm in the cool, wet environment. This discovery proves that fur was an important trait for early mammal relatives.

We know a lot about this animal from the fossils found in 2006.

The fossils date back to the Middle to Late Jurassic period. This was about 159 to 164 million years ago. Castorocauda was a very large animal for its time. Scientists estimate it weighed between 900 and 2,000 grams. This made it much larger than the previous record holder, Sinoconodon. Its teeth were also very interesting to study. It had four incisors, one canine, five premolars, and six molars.

Castorocauda is a great way to see how animals change to fit their homes.

Its teeth curved backward to help it grab slippery fish. This is a way of living that we see in modern seals and whales. Even though it lived millions of years ago, it acted a lot like animals we see today. It shows us that the path of life is full of surprises. Just when we think we know how animals grew, we find something new. Castorocauda reminds us that the ancient world was a very busy place.
