Bubble gum

language culture Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Bubble gum is a special type of chewing gum. It is made to be blown into big bubbles.

People love it because it can stretch and grow. This gum is different from regular gum. It can hold its shape even when you blow it out. This makes it fun to play with in your mouth. It is designed to stay stable while you use your tongue to stretch it.

Making bubble gum is a very careful process. Some gum uses natural rubber called chicle. This material must pass many tests for purity and cleanliness. Most gum today uses synthetic gum bases instead. These man-made materials make the gum softer to chew. They also help the flavor last much longer. Synthetic gum is less tacky or sticky than older types. This means it stays in your mouth better.

History shows how this sweet treat began. In 1928, Walter Diemer worked in Philadelphia. He was an accountant for the Fleer Chewing Gum Company. He was testing new recipes for the company. He found a recipe that was less sticky than other gum. It also stretched much more easily. The president of the company named it Dubble Bubble. This name came from its stretchy texture.

There are many interesting facts about bubble gum. The famous pink color was actually an accident. Diemer's original recipe looked a dull gray color. He only had red dye on hand to fix it. He added the dye and created the pink look. Later, new brands like Hubba Bubba and Bubble Yum arrived. These used synthetic bases so gum would not stick to faces. Even flavors change from one company to another. Some use fruit smells called esters to taste good.

Bubble gum connects to many fun things. Children often pick strawberry or blue raspberry flavors. They prefer these over complex tastes. People even compete to blow the largest bubbles. Susan Montgomery Williams set a record in 1994. Chad Fell set a hands-free record in 2004. You can even see gum on walls in some places. There is a famous spot called Bubblegum Alley in California. There is also a gum wall in Seattle.
