Lollipop

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A lollipop is a sweet treat made of hard candy on a stick.

You can enjoy them by licking or sucking the candy. People use different names for them in different places. Some call them lollies and others call them suckers. They come in many bright colors and tasty flavors. Fruit flavors are very common for these treats. They can be tiny candies given away at banks or barbershops. Some are huge treats made from twisted candy canes.

Making these candies is a very interesting way to work with sugar. The main ingredients are usually just sugar and corn syrup. Makers heat the mixture until it gets very hot. This heat changes the color and creates a nice smell. To keep the candy smooth, makers add inhibitors. These are things like honey, butter, or cream of tartar. They stop the sugar from turning into crystals. This process creates a glassy solid instead of a grainy one.

The history of candy on a stick goes back a long time. In the Middle Ages, nobles ate boiled sugar using sticks or handles. The exact inventor of the modern lollipop is still a mystery. However, many American companies claim they helped create it. One story says George Smith of New Haven, Connecticut, started making them in 1908. He named them after a famous racehorse called Lolly Pop. He later trademarked the name in 1931.

There are many different kinds of lollipops to discover. Some have soft fillings like bubble gum or a Tootsie Roll inside. Some novelty treats even have a flashing light in the center. In North America, some sticks even have motors to make the candy spin. You might also find frozen water-based lollipops called popsicles. In places like Germany or the Netherlands, some are flavored with salmiak. Even medicine can be carried in a lollipop to help children.

Lollipops connect to many parts of our daily lives. They are a simple way to enjoy a sweet snack. Some people use them as a way to take medicine without a fuss. There is even a potent medicine called Actiq used for cancer pain. While some say they help with diets, that has not been tested. Whether they are tiny or huge, they are a very popular treat. They show how science and food can come together in a fun way.
