Blood brothers are people who are not related by birth. They choose to swear a special loyalty to one another. This bond makes them feel like a real family.

In modern times, people often use a ceremony called a blood oath. During this, each person makes a small cut on a finger or arm. They press the cuts together and bind them. This symbolizes that their blood flows in each other's veins. It is a way to turn a friendship into a lifelong promise.

Many different cultures have unique ways to perform these rituals. The Norsemen used a rite involving a strip of turf. They would let their blood flow while ducking under an arch made of turf propped up by spears. In Scythia, people let their blood drip into a cup. They mixed the blood with wine and drank it together.

In the Philippines, people practiced the sandugo, which means "one blood." This ritual helped seal friendships or treaties. Some versions in Palawan involved putting blood on the tongue and forehead.

History shows that these oaths helped groups of people work together. In East Asia, these ceremonies helped bring different tribes into an alliance. The Mongols and the Turkic people used them often. A famous story from China is the Oath of the Peach Garden. In this tale, three men sacrificed a black ox and a white horse. They swore they would stay loyal until the day they died.

There are many famous examples of blood brothers in history. In 1066, two Norman knights named Robert d'Ouilly and Roger d'Ivry were blood brothers. They even agreed to share the profits from their adventures. In the 12th century, the Mongol leaders Yesükhei and Toghrul were also blood brothers. Even the gods appear in these stories. In Norse mythology, the gods Odin and Loki are said to be blood brothers.

Blood brotherhood connects many parts of the world through the idea of trust. In Sub-Saharan Africa, leaders used blood oaths to make political connections. In Eastern Europe, whole groups of soldiers became one family through this ceremony. This was very common in the Balkans to help people fight together. Even Christian churches have ceremonies that represent becoming blood brothers. Whether through wine, milk, or a shared oath, the goal is always togetherness. It is a powerful way to build a community based on choice.
