Blood brothers are people who are not born into the same family. Instead, they make a special promise to be loyal to each other. This bond makes them feel like one family.

Many cultures have special ways to make this promise. In the past, Norsemen used a ritual with a strip of turf. They would let their blood flow while ducking under an arch made of turf. In Scythia, people let blood drip into a cup. They mixed it with wine and drank it together. In the Philippines, people used a ritual called sandugo. This means "one blood." They often mixed blood with wine to seal a peace treaty or a friendship.

In East Asia, these oaths helped bring different tribes together. A famous story from China tells of three men. They made the Oath of the Peach Garden. They even sacrificed a horse and an ox to show their faith.
