You can use sticks of chalk to draw on it. White chalk comes from limestone. Colored chalk comes from gypsum.

Old blackboards were made of thin slate stone. Many new boards use dark paint. Some high-quality boards use porcelain-enameled steel. This is steel with a hard coating of porcelain. These boards can last 10 to 20 years.

Using chalk can make a mess. It makes chalk dust. This dust can bother people with asthma. It can also hurt computers. Sometimes, old marks stay on the board. This is called ghosting.

Many people do not like the sound of nails on a board.

A study in Germany found that humans hate this sound. Even if you remove the high notes, it is still annoying.

Blackboards have a long history. People used black tablets in Indian schools in the 11th century. In the 1800s, James Pillans made colored chalk. He used chalk, dyes, and porridge to make it.
