Slate is a special kind of rock. It starts as soft mud or ash. Over time, heavy pressure squeezes the mud. This is called metamorphism, or a way rocks change.

This squeezing makes the rock very flat. The tiny parts inside turn into thin layers. This creates slaty cleavage. This term means the rock can split into thin sheets.

Many slates are grey. But they can be purple, green, or blue. Some slate from North Wales has many colors.

People use slate for many things. It is great for roofs. It does not soak up much water. This helps it stay strong in the frost.

It is also used for floor tiles and stairs. Some people use it for billiard tables. In the past, children used small pieces as writing slates. They used chalk to write on them. This is where the phrase "clean slate" comes from.
