Slate is a very special kind of metamorphic rock. Metamorphic means the rock has changed from its original form. It usually starts as a soft sedimentary rock like shale or volcanic ash. This original rock is made of clay or mud. Over a long time, the rock undergoes a process called low-grade regional metamorphism. This means it is squeezed by heavy pressure and heat.

This change makes the rock much harder and very fine-grained. It is the finest-grained rock that shows these layers. Because it forms under mild heat, you can sometimes find tiny fossils inside it.

How does this rock get its flat shape? It all happens because of strong compression. As the mud is squeezed, it can lose up to 50% of its volume. The tiny grains of clay rotate to lie flat. They form layers that are perpendicular to the direction of the squeeze. This creates something called slaty cleavage. Slaty cleavage is the way the rock splits into thin, smooth sheets.

Under a microscope, you can see tiny layers of quartz and feldspar. These are separated by very thin layers of mica. These layers are often less than 100 microns thick. This is why the rock can be split so easily.

People have used slate for many different things for a long time. It is a great material for roofing because it is very durable. It has a very low water absorption index of less than 0.4%. This means it does not soak up much water, so it resists frost damage.

You can also find slate used for floor tiles, stairs, and even billiard tables. In the past, people used small pieces of slate as writing boards. They used chalk to write on them, just like a modern notepad. This is where we get the phrases "clean slate" or "blank slate."

Slate comes in many beautiful colors. While it is often grey, it can also be purple, green, or cyan. For example, slate from North Wales can show many different shades. Some slate even has a spotted texture from iron.

Different parts of the world produce different kinds of slate. Spain is the world's largest producer and exporter of natural slate. Brazil is the second-largest producer, mostly from the state of Minas Gerais. Other places with slate include Australia, China, and parts of Europe like France and Italy.

There are many interesting ways to use this stone today. In Pennsylvania, people use slate to make turkey calls for hunting. The sound of scratching the stone imitates wild turkeys very well. In Japan, slate was used to make black stones for the game of Go. It is also used for heavy things like laboratory bench tops. This is because slate is fireproof and does not change easily with heat.
