Phyllite is a special type of metamorphic rock.

Metamorphic rocks are made when heat and pressure change old rocks. Phyllite is very interesting because of how it looks. It has a silky or golden shine on its surface. Scientists call this shine phyllitic luster. This shine happens because of tiny minerals inside the rock.

The rock often looks wavy or crinkled. It can be black or gray in color. Sometimes it is a light greenish gray. This rock is a middle step in a big change. It sits between slate and schist in the rock world.

This rock forms through a way it works called metamorphism.

It starts as a parent rock like shale or pelite. Sometimes it starts as slate. Heat and pressure make the rock change. This is called low-grade metamorphism. The minerals inside the rock begin to grow. These minerals include quartz and chlorite. They also include sericite, which is a fine white mica. These tiny flakes grow larger than the flakes in slate. They all line up in the same direction. This alignment creates the wavy look of the rock.

The name for this rock comes from a Greek word. The word is phyllon, which means "leaf."

This name fits because the rock has good fissility. Fissility means the rock likes to split into thin sheets. It is similar to how you might peel layers from a book. The mica flakes are too small to see with your eyes. However, they are much bigger than the flakes in slate. They are still smaller than the large flakes found in schist. This makes phyllite a middle stage of change.

You can find phyllite in many different places on Earth.

It is found in the Dalradian metasediments of northwest Arran. In north Cornwall, there are special types. These are called Tredorn phyllites and Woolgarden phyllites. Some people call a type of Carolina slate "volcanic phyllite." There is also a rock called Duke stone. This is a dacitic phyllite that is fractured. It gets its colors from iron oxide. These facts help geologists study how rocks change over time.

People use phyllite for many useful things in daily life. They use it as decorative aggregates for many projects. It is also used for interior decor and building stones. You might see it used as facing stones or curbing. It is a good choice for garden decoration too. Some people use it to make cemetery markers. It is also used for commemorative tablets and writing slates. Artists even use this rock to create beautiful artworks. It is a strong and pretty material for many jobs.
