Mica is a special group of silicate minerals. These minerals are famous for a unique physical trait. They can be split into very thin, flexible plates. Scientists call this perfect basal cleavage.

You can find mica in many different types of rocks. It is common in igneous and metamorphic rocks. Sometimes, you might even find small flakes in sedimentary rocks. Some crystals are so large they are called "books." These huge crystals can be several feet across.

Mica works because of its tiny, layered structure. It is made of many parallel layers called TOT layers. These layers consist of two tetrahedral sheets and one octahedral sheet.

The sheets within a layer are bonded very strongly together. However, the layers themselves are held by weak ionic bonds. These weak bonds involve ions like potassium, sodium, or calcium. Because these connections are weak, the mineral splits easily. This structure allows mica to be both elastic and fragile.

People have used mica for a long time. In 1899, companies even advertised it for special uses.

In modern times, we find it in many industries. For example, the electrical industry uses muscovite mica. It is great for making capacitors. This is because it is a strong insulator. It can stop electricity from flowing easily. It also stays stable even when things get very hot.

Mica is found all over the world. In 2010, Russia was a major producer with 100,000 tonnes. Finland produced 68,000 tonnes that same year. The United States produced 53,000 tonnes of mica.

One of the largest single crystals ever found was phlogopite. It was discovered at the Lacey Mine in Ontario, Canada. That huge crystal weighed about 1.5 kilograms. Similar large crystals have also been found in Karelia, Russia. Different types of mica can cost different amounts. High-quality mica can cost more than $2,000 per kilogram.

You can see the effects of mica in your daily life. Have you ever seen a shimmer in your makeup?

Mica is used in eye shadow, lipstick, and nail polish. It adds a pretty frost or shimmer to these products. It is also used in pearlescent paints for cars. Even your home uses mica in drywall. Ground mica helps the joint compound stay smooth. It also helps prevent the walls from cracking.
