Talc

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Talc is a very special clay mineral. It is made of hydrated magnesium silicate. This mineral is famous for being extremely soft. In fact, it is the softest mineral on the Mohs scale. This scale measures hardness by seeing which minerals can scratch others.

Talc can look like white or green stone. It can also appear as a fine powder.

It can look pearly or shiny. Most of the time, it is translucent or opaque.

The way talc works comes from its tiny structure. It is a layered mineral made of TOT layers. These layers consist of two silica sheets and one magnesium sheet. These layers are held together by very weak forces. Because the bonds are so weak, the layers slide apart easily. This is why talc has perfect basal cleavage. This means it breaks into flat, thin sheets.

Talc forms through many different ways in nature. It often forms from the metamorphism of minerals like serpentine or olivine. This happens when water and carbon dioxide are present. This process is called talc carbonation. It can also form from a reaction between dolomite and silica. Sometimes, it forms in sedimentary rocks from minerals like kerolite. These minerals change over time in lakes or oceans.

Many different places in the world produce talc. China is the biggest producer of talc on Earth. In 2016, China produced about 2.2 million tonnes. This is 30% of the whole world's supply. Brazil is the next largest producer at 12%. India follows closely at 11%. The United States produces about 9% of the world's talc.

Humans use talc for many helpful jobs. It is used in paints, ceramics, and paper. It is also used to coat rubber gloves so they do not stick. Some people use it as baby powder. However, doctors say to be careful with powder. Breathing in small particles can cause lung damage.

Some rocks, called soapstone, are made mostly of talc. Soapstone is great for making sinks and stoves. This is because it resists heat and acid very well.
