Phyllite is a special type of rock.

It is a metamorphic rock. This means heat and pressure changed it. It starts as a rock called slate. The slate changes into phyllite.

This change happens because of low-grade metamorphism. That means the heat and pressure were not too high. Inside the rock, tiny mica flakes grow. These flakes are bigger than the ones in slate. You cannot see them with your eyes. They all line up in the same way. This gives the rock a silky shine. This shine is called phyllitic luster.

The rock can look gray or black. It can also be light green. The surface often looks wavy or crinkled. Phyllite can split into thin sheets. People use this rock for many things. They use it for garden decor and building stones. It is also used for art and cemetery markers.
