You can write on it with special pens. These pens are called dry-erase markers. You can wipe the marks away very quickly. This makes them different from old blackboards.

Whiteboards became very popular in the 1990s. Many schools began using them then. This was to help kids with dust allergies. Chalk dust from old boards can also hurt computers.

There are many different kinds of boards. Some are made of glass. Glass boards are very strong. They do not get scratches or dents easily. Other boards use porcelain, which is a hard coating on steel. This makes the board last a long time. Some boards use melamine. Melamine is a type of paper with resin in it. These boards are often the least expensive. You can even buy dry-erase paint. This paint goes right on your wall. It makes a new surface for writing. You might need to paint it again every few years.
