You can use special pens to make marks on it. These marks are not permanent, so they are easy to remove. This makes them different from old blackboards. People call them marker boards or dry-erase boards. They are helpful tools for sharing ideas quickly.

Using a whiteboard works in a very simple way. You use a dry-erase marker to draw or write. Because the surface is very smooth, the ink stays on top. You can wipe the ink away with an eraser. Some boards are made of glass or porcelain. These surfaces are non-porous, which means they do not soak up ink. This helps prevent marks from staying behind.

The history of the whiteboard has many different parts. Avery D. Butler installed one in a classroom in 1937. This was in Elgin, Illinois. Later, Martin Heit and Albert Stallion helped make them popular. Heit was a photographer and a veteran of the Korean War. Esmond Hellerman also made a version in the UK. He used adhesive to cover old blackboards.

Whiteboards became very common in the 1990s. Many businesses started using them in the early 1990s. Schools also began using them during this time. This was to help children with dust allergies. Chalk dust can also be bad for computers. By the late 1990s, 21% of American classrooms used them. In 1974, the Soviet Union even suggested them for schools.

You might see whiteboards in many places today. They are in offices, meeting rooms, and schools. You can even find them on your computer. Virtual whiteboards are parts of software applications. They let people draw on a digital canvas during meetings. You can also find adhesive whiteboard rolls. These allow you to make your own custom boards. You could make a calendar or a grocery list.
