An attic is a special space found under a roof.

It sits right below the pitched top of a house. Some people call this space a loft or a garret. You might also hear it called a sky parlor. These rooms often have slanted walls and tricky corners. You might see exposed rafters, which are the wooden beams of the roof.

Most people reach an attic using a ladder or a loft hatch.

People use these spaces in many different ways. Some attics are small and only hold insulation. Other attics hold storage or HVAC equipment, which helps control air. Some people turn them into bedrooms or home offices. These are called habitable attics.

A habitable attic might even have its own windows and stairs. A loft or mezzanine is similar but is not a full floor. A loft usually only covers a few rooms. It often leaves one side open to the floor below.

Attics have a long history with interesting names. The word "attic" comes from the Attica region in Greece. It is linked to a style called Attic architecture. Long ago, it meant a low decorative part on a building. It could even mean a small decorative column.

This shows how building styles change over time. Today, we use the word to describe the space under the roof.

Attics play a big role in how a house stays warm. Hot air rises from the lower floors and stays in the attic. This can make the attic a very warm place. Without insulation, an average house can lose 15% of its energy.

Adding insulation helps to lower heating costs. Some buildings also use vents to let air move through the space. Modern building codes allow for both vented and unvented attics. The right choice depends on the climate of the area.

Ventilation is very important for keeping a building healthy. Vents help stop moisture from building up in the space. This prevents mold from growing on the wood rafters. In cold places, vents stop ice-dams from forming on the roof. In hot places, they help keep the house cool.

Some vents are called soffit vents under the eaves. Others are louvered vents found in gables. There are even ridge vents that run along the very top line of the roof.
