An attic is a space under a roof.

It sits right below the top of a building. These rooms often have slanted walls. They may also have beams called rafters.

Because of the roof, corners can be hard to reach. Some people use a ladder to get inside.

People use attics in many ways. Some use them to store old things. Others make them into bedrooms or offices. These are called habitable attics.

Attics help control the heat in a house. Hot air rises from the lower floors. This air stays in the attic. This can make the space very warm. To fix this, people add insulation. Insulation is a soft layer that stops heat loss. Without it, a house can lose 15% of its heat.

Some attics have vents to let air move. Vents help stop moisture from building up. This stops mold from growing on the wood. In cold places, vents also stop ice from forming on the roof. In hot places, they help keep the house cool.
