Appendix (anatomy)

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The appendix is a small, finger-like tube in your body. It is connected to a pouch called the cecum. The cecum is part of your large intestine. It sits where your small intestine meets your large intestine. Some people call it the vermiform appendix. This name comes from a Latin word meaning worm-shaped.

This little tube has a very important job. Scientists used to think it was not useful at all. Now, they believe it acts like a safe house. It stores good bacteria that live in your gut. If you get sick with diarrhea, these good germs stay safe inside. Once you feel better, the bacteria come out to help. This helps your gut get healthy again very quickly.

Learning about the appendix has changed over many years. Charles Darwin once thought it was just a leftover part. He believed our ancestors used it to digest tough plants. In 2007, researchers at Duke University had a new idea. William Parker and Randy Bollinger suggested the safe house theory. Their work helped people see why the appendix is still here.

There are many interesting facts about how it sits in the body. Most people have it in the lower right side of the abdomen. It is near the right hip bone. However, some people have it on the left side. This can happen to mirror image twins. The tip of the tube can also point in different ways. In Ghana, many people have it in a position called retrocecal. In Iran, the pelvic position is much more common.

Sometimes the appendix can get sick or swollen. This sickness is called appendicitis. It can cause pain in the middle of the belly first. Then, the pain moves to the lower right side. You might also feel nausea or have a fever. If it is very sick, a doctor might do an appendectomy. This is a surgery to remove the appendix. Doctors can also use it to help people with other health needs.
