Appendicitis is a common reason for sudden belly pain. It happens when the appendix becomes swollen and inflamed. The appendix is a small part of your digestive system.

This condition is a significant medical issue for many people. If it is not treated, the appendix can burst. This is a very serious event for the body.

Doctors must act quickly to help the person feel better.

The problem usually starts with a blockage in the appendix. A tiny, hard stone made of waste can get stuck. This is called a fecalith.

Other things like tumors or germs can also cause a block. When the appendix is blocked, it fills with mucus. This causes the pressure inside to go up. The high pressure stops blood from flowing through the area. Eventually, the tissue can become damaged or even die.

Doctors look for specific signs to find appendicitis. Many people feel pain near their belly button first. After a few hours, the pain often moves to the lower right side.

People might also feel sick to their stomach or have a fever. A doctor might check for pain when a person coughs. This is called Dunphy's sign. They may also feel the belly to see if it is sensitive. This helps them understand how much inflammation is present.

To be sure, doctors use special imaging tests. An ultrasound is often used for children or pregnant women.

This is because it does not use radiation. A CT scan is another common test.

A CT scan is very accurate at finding the problem. Doctors also check blood to look for signs of infection. They look for a high white blood cell count. This shows the body is fighting something.

The most common way to fix appendicitis is surgery. A surgeon removes the inflamed appendix to keep the person safe.

They can do this through a small cut called an open incision. They can also use a laparoscopy. This method uses tiny cuts and a small camera. In 2015, there were about 11.6 million cases reported worldwide. This led to around 50,100 deaths. In the United States, over 300,000 people have this surgery every year.
