life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Gallstones are small, hard objects that form inside the gallbladder. The gallbladder is a small organ that stores bile, a fluid that helps your body digest food. When these stones form, the condition is called cholelithiasis. If a stone moves into the bile ducts, it is called choledocholithiasis.

Many people do not even know they have them. In fact, about 60% to 80% of people with stones have no symptoms at all. These are often called "silent stones." They can stay in the body for many years without causing any trouble.

Stones form through a specific way it works within the bile. Bile is made of things like cholesterol, bile salts, and bilirubin. If there is too much cholesterol and not enough bile salts, stones can grow.

Another factor is how the gallbladder moves. If it does not empty often or well, the bile can become too thick. This can cause the parts to crystallize into a solid stone. Some stones are mostly cholesterol, while others are mostly bilirubin, which are called pigment stones.

Doctors look for certain signs to see if stones are causing problems. A "gallbladder attack," or biliary colic, happens when a stone blocks a duct. This causes a sudden, sharp pain in the upper right part of the abdomen.

This pain often peaks about one hour after it starts. Sometimes, the pain can even be felt in the right shoulder. Other complications can happen if the stones cause inflammation. This might include cholecystitis, which is inflammation of the gallbladder, or pancreatitis, which affects the pancreas. Symptoms of these issues can include fever, vomiting, or yellowish skin.

Many different things can change a person's risk for getting stones. For example, women and people over age 40 are more likely to have them.

Risk can also be linked to things like obesity, diabetes, or rapid weight loss. Certain ethnic groups have different rates, too. In some places, 48% of Native Americans experience gallstones. In other parts of the world, such as Africa, the rate is as low as 3%. In developed countries, about 10% to 15% of adults have gallstones. In 2013, gallbladder-related diseases affected about 104 million people.

If stones cause pain, there are several ways to help. Doctors often use an ultrasound to see the stones inside the body.

If a person has many attacks, a doctor might recommend surgery to remove the gallbladder. This is usually done while the patient is under general anesthesia, which means they are asleep. In rare cases where surgery is not possible, doctors might use medicine to dissolve the stones.
