Hernia

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A hernia is a medical condition where tissue or an organ pushes through a weak spot.

Imagine your belly is a container made of muscles, tendons, and bones. These parts work together to keep your insides in place. If the muscle wall becomes weak or damaged, a small hole or "defect" can form. An organ, like the bowel, or even fatty tissue can then poke through this opening. This often creates a visible bulge under the skin.

This happens because of changes in pressure inside the body. When pressure builds up, the muscles push back to hold everything steady. If the pressure gets too high, it can force tissue through a weak area. This can be caused by things like heavy lifting, coughing, or obesity. Some people are even born with these weak spots. Once a hernia starts, it often keeps getting larger. This is because the tension on the wall increases at the site of the hole.

People have known about hernias for a very long time. The first known description of a hernia is found in the Ebers Papyrus. This is an ancient Egyptian document from at least 1550 BC. Today, doctors use many tools to find them. They might use an ultrasound or a special scan called a CT scan.

For some types, like a hiatus hernia, doctors use a tool called an endoscopy. This helps them see exactly where the stomach is pushing through the diaphragm.

There are many different types of hernias found in the body. Inguinal hernias are the most common and happen in the groin area.

These affect about 27% of males at some point in their lives. Umbilical hernias happen near the belly button. Hiatus hernias occur when the stomach moves up into the chest. These can cause heartburn or chest pain. In 2019, there were about 32.53 million cases of these abdominal hernias worldwide.

While some hernias are not emergencies, others need fast help. A serious problem is called strangulation. This is when the blood supply to an organ is blocked.

If this happens, the area may turn red, purple, or dark. Doctors can fix hernias using different kinds of surgery. They might use open surgery or a method called laparoscopic surgery.

Some doctors even use a robotic-assisted system to help during the repair.
