The cecum is a small pouch in the body.

It marks the very start of the large intestine. You can find it on the right side of the body. It sits right next to the appendix. The name comes from a Latin word, caecus. This word means "blind." It is called blind because it is like a dead end.

This pouch works as a doorway for food. It receives a substance called chyme from the ileum. The ileum is the end of the small intestine. A small part called the ileocecal valve controls this flow. This valve is also known as Bauhin's valve. The cecum then connects to the ascending colon. This connection is called the cecocolic junction.

People have studied this part for a long time. Ancient Greek philosophers looked at these parts during dissections. They did not fully understand how the ileum joined the cecum. Later, scientists studied animals to learn about humans. They found the ileocecal valve in many creatures. In some animals, the valve is very small. This made it hard to see the connection.

There are many interesting facts about the cecum. In humans, it averages about 8.7 cm wide. The width can range from 8.0 to 10.5 cm. During growth, the cecum forms in the sixth week. It grows from a part called the midgut. The walls of the cecum grow at different speeds. This growth helps decide where the appendix sits.

Different animals use their cecum in unique ways. Herbivores often have a very large cecum. It helps them break down tough plant fibers using bacteria. Rabbits use it to make special food called cecotropes. They eat these again to get more nutrients. Meat eaters usually have a much smaller cecum. Some animals, like bears and raccoons, have no cecum at all.
