Duodenum

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The duodenum is a very busy part of the digestive system. It is the first section of the small intestine in most vertebrates. This includes mammals, reptiles, and birds. In humans, it is a hollow, C-shaped tube. It connects the stomach to the next part of the intestine called the jejunum. The duodenum is actually the shortest part of the small intestine. It plays a huge role in how we process food.

This tube works like a busy station for food. When food leaves the stomach, it is called chyme. This chyme is very acidic and needs to be handled carefully. The duodenum has special parts called Brunner's glands. These glands make mucus and bicarbonate to neutralize the acid. This step protects the tube from the strong stomach juices. The duodenum also uses enzymes to break down food. It uses these tools to help with digestion.

Scientists have studied how this organ is built. The duodenum is divided into four distinct parts. The first part is called the superior part. The second part is the descending part. The third part is the transverse part. The fourth part is the ascending part. The first part starts at the pylorus of the stomach. It begins with a slightly wider area called the duodenal bulb.

There are many important details about how it stays healthy. In mammals, the duodenum is a main site for absorbing iron. It also sends signals to the brain and the liver. It uses hormones like secretin and cholecystokinin to do this. These signals tell the body to release bile and enzymes. These substances help break down fats and other nutrients. The duodenum even helps control your blood sugar levels. It is a key part of keeping your body in balance.

Sometimes, the duodenum can face hard jobs or health issues. Bacteria called Helicobacter pylori can cause ulcers. These are small sores that form in the lining. This happens when the bacteria erode the protective mucus. Other issues can happen if the pancreas is shaped differently. An annular pancreas is when part of the pancreas circles the duodenum. This can cause a blockage in the gut. Doctors use tests like endoscopies to look inside and help.
