Duodenum

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The duodenum is a very busy part of your body. It is the first part of the small intestine. It is a hollow tube shaped like the letter C. In humans, it connects the stomach to the next part of the gut. This next part is called the jejunum. The duodenum is the shortest part of the small intestine. It is divided into four sections.

The duodenum has a big job. It helps break down the food you eat. It uses enzymes, which are special tools that help digestion. When food leaves the stomach, it can be very acidic. The duodenum has special parts called Brunner's glands. These glands make mucus and bicarbonate. This helps to calm the acid from the stomach.

The duodenum also helps your body take in nutrients. It is a main place where your body absorbs iron. It sends signals to your brain and other organs. These signals tell your body how much food you have eaten. This helps control your hunger and your blood sugar. It is a very important part of how you stay healthy.
