Gastroenterology is a branch of medicine. It focuses on the digestive system. This system helps your body use food.

The digestive system has many parts. It includes the esophagus and the stomach. It also includes the small and large intestines. Other parts like the liver and pancreas help too. Food moves through these parts in a set of steps. This movement is called peristalsis. The body breaks down food to get nutrients. Then, it removes waste from the body.

Doctors who study this are called gastroenterologists. They help people with many different problems. They might treat acid reflux. This is when stomach contents come back up. They also treat diseases like Crohn's disease.

Doctors use special tools to see inside. They use an endoscope. An endoscope is a thin tube with a camera.

Some doctors even use ultrasound. Ultrasound uses sound waves to see inside the body. This helps them find problems without using surgery.
