Internists study diseases of the internal organs. These are the parts inside your body. They help find out why a person feels sick. They look for the cause of symptoms. This might include things like chest pain or feeling very tired.

Internists are experts at managing complex problems. They might treat a person with many illnesses at once. These doctors work in hospitals and clinics. Some internists choose to study one part of the body. We call these subspecialties. For example, a doctor might study cardiology. This is the study of the heart. Another might study gastroenterology. This is the study of digestive diseases.
