How does the digestive system work? It follows a specific set of steps to process food. First, food moves through the GI tract using peristalsis. Peristalsis is a way the body moves material along. Next, the body uses digestion to break down the food. This allows the body to absorb nutrients for energy. Finally, the body removes waste through a process called defecation.

For example, Irynakhty was a court physician in 2125 B.C. during the tenth dynasty. The ancient Greeks had different theories about how food processed. Technological progress changed how doctors view the internal body. In 1805, Philipp Bozzini created the Lichtleiter, a light-guiding instrument. This was the earliest description of endoscopy. In 1868, Adolf Kussmaul developed the gastroscope. By 1957, Basil Hirschowitz introduced the first fibreoptic gastroscope prototype. These tools allowed for direct visualization of internal organs.
