The cecum is a small pouch in your body.

It sits on your right side. It is at the start of the large intestine. The name comes from a Latin word that means "blind." This is because it is like a dead end. One end joins to the appendix. The other end connects to the ascending colon. The ascending colon is a part of the large intestine.

Food moves from the small intestine into the cecum. A tiny part called the ileocecal valve helps this happen. In humans, the cecum does two main jobs. It soaks up salts and electrolytes. It also makes waste slippery so it can move easily.

Different animals use the cecum in different ways. Many animals that eat plants have a large cecum. It stores food so bacteria can break down tough fibers. Rabbits use it to make special food called cecotropes. They eat these again to get more nutrients. Animals that eat mostly meat often have a very small cecum. Some animals, like bears, do not have a cecum at all.
