Most of these bacteria live in the guts of mammals. This includes humans. Some can also be found in the mouth.

These bacteria are very helpful. They help the immune system. The immune system is how your body fights germs. They also help make the gut wall stronger. This helps keep the body healthy. Some people even eat them in yogurt. These are called probiotics.

Bifidobacterium eat things called carbohydrates. This is a type of food.

Babies get a lot of these bacteria. They get them from their mother's milk. The milk has special sugars. These sugars help the bacteria grow. As babies grow up, they eat different foods. Their bacteria change too. By age three, their gut bacteria become more diverse. This means they have many different kinds of tiny friends living inside them.
