Bifidobacterium is a group of tiny living things called bacteria. They are found almost everywhere in the digestive tracts of mammals. This includes humans, but they can also live in the mouth or the vagina.

These bacteria are very important for keeping bodies healthy. They are part of the microbiota, which is the collection of tiny life inside us. Some people even eat certain strains as probiotics. Probiotics are living things that can provide health benefits when you eat them.

These bacteria work in many helpful ways inside the body. They help the immune system, which is how your body fights off germs. They also make the intestinal barrier stronger to protect the gut.

One way they help is by eating carbohydrates through a process called fermentation. This process creates things called acetate and butyrate. These substances can help protect against different diseases. They also make food for other important bacteria to use.

Scientists have studied these bacteria for a long time. In 1899, a French pediatrician named Henri Tissier found them. He was working at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. He noticed they had a Y-shaped shape, which means "bifid."

Later, in 1907, Élie Metchnikoff suggested that these bacteria were good for health. He saw that people in Bulgaria lived a long time because they ate fermented milk. He thought eating these bacteria could help people stay healthy.

There are many different kinds of Bifidobacterium. Their tiny genomes, or sets of instructions, can be different sizes. For example, B. indicum has a genome size of 1.73 Mb. Another kind, B. biavatii, has a larger genome of 3.25 Mb.

These bacteria are often found in different places. Some live in the guts of bees, while others live in birds or rabbits. Some even live in primates.

Babies and adults have different types of these bacteria. A baby's gut is mostly filled with Bifidobacterium. They get these from their mother's milk. The milk has special sugars called oligosaccharides.

These sugars are hard for humans to digest, but the bacteria love them. As children grow and eat solid foods, their bacteria change. By the time a child is three years old, their gut bacteria become more diverse. This means they have many different kinds of tiny living things in their bodies.
