Lactobacillus

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Lactobacillus are tiny, rod-shaped living things called bacteria. They belong to a large group known as the Lactobacillaceae family. These bacteria are very important because they live inside many humans and animals. You can find them in places like the digestive system and the female genital system.

In these spots, they form biofilms. A biofilm is a thin layer that helps them stick to surfaces. This layer allows them to stay in one place even in harsh conditions. This helps them keep a large population where they are needed most.

These bacteria have a special way of working with the human body. This is called a mutualistic relationship. In this relationship, both sides help each other stay healthy. The Lactobacillus protect the host by fighting off harmful pathogens, which are bad germs. In return, the human body provides the bacteria with nutrients to eat. This partnership is a key part of how our bodies stay balanced. They are also famous as probiotics, which are helpful bacteria found in foods like yogurt.

Eating them may help with skin disorders like eczema or help treat diarrhea.

Lactobacillus use a process called metabolism to turn food into energy. This is the way they stay alive and grow. Some types are called homofermentative. This means they take sugars, known as hexoses, and turn them into lactate. Lactate is a type of acid. Other types are called heterofermentative. These bacteria turn sugars into lactate, but they also produce carbon dioxide and other things like acetate or ethanol. Most of these bacteria can live even when there is some oxygen around. This ability is called being aerotolerant.

Scientists have spent a long time studying these tiny organisms. Until the year 2020, the Lactobacillus group included 261 different species. However, scientists did a major change to how they group them. They moved many species into 25 different new groups, or genera. For example, one group is called Bombilactobacillus, which are bacteria found in bees. Another is Lacticaseibacillus, which are related to how we make cheese. As of 2025, there are 50 valid species left in the Lactobacillus genus. These species are specially adapted to live in animals or insects.

The way these bacteria are built can change quite a lot. Their genomes, which are the sets of instructions for life, vary in size. They can range from 1.2 to 4.9 megabases in size. Because of this, the number of genes can range from 1,267 to about 4,758. Even within one single species, the instructions can be different. For instance, the species L. crispatus has different genome sizes in different strains. Some bacteria also have plasmids. These are small pieces of DNA that help the bacteria adapt to their environment. This helps them survive wherever they live.
