life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The appendix is a small, finger-like tube. It is shaped like a worm. This shape is why some call it the vermiform appendix. It sits in your belly near your right hip bone. It is attached to the cecum. The cecum is a pouch in your large intestine.

Scientists used to think the appendix was not useful. Now, they think it helps your body. It may act as a safe house for good bacteria. These are tiny germs that help your gut stay healthy. If you get sick with diarrhea, these good germs can hide in the appendix. Later, they can come out to help your gut again.

The appendix also has immune tissue around it. This tissue helps your body fight off bad germs. Sometimes, the appendix can get sick. This is called appendicitis. This means the tube is inflamed or swollen. It can cause pain in your belly. It can also cause a fever or nausea. If it is very sick, a doctor may perform an appendectomy. This is a surgery to remove the appendix. Most people live well without it.
