If a person suffers from severe diarrhea, these bacteria stay safe inside the appendix. Once the illness passes, the bacteria emerge to repopulate the gut flora.

The appendix is also a key part of the immune system. It contains gut-associated lymphoid tissue, which is immune tissue found around the gut. This tissue helps manage the body's immune responses. The appendix supports B cell-mediated immune responses and extrathymically derived T cells. These cells help the body recognize and fight off invading pathogens like viruses and bacteria. Additionally, innate lymphoid cells help the appendix maintain overall digestive health. A 2016 study showed a positive link between having an appendix and higher levels of cecal lymphoid tissue. This supports the idea that the appendix provides significant immune benefits.

Anatomy can vary quite a bit between different people. Most people have the appendix in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen. It is usually located near the right hip bone. The base of the appendix sits beneath the ileocecal valve. This valve is the structure that separates the large intestine from the small intestine. If appendicitis is not treated, the appendix may rupture. A rupture can lead to peritonitis, which is a serious infection. It can also help children with paralyzed bowels access their colon.
