Consequently, they have a reduced cecum that is often replaced by the appendix. Some mammals, such as bears, raccoons, and red pandas, do not have a cecum at all. In birds, the ceca are often paired, though parrots are an exception and lack them. Even invertebrates like squid have structures called ceca, but they are not related to vertebrate ceca.

These are not the same as the cecum found in amniotes. The size of the cecum also varies significantly. In humans, the average inner diameter is 8.7 cm. However, the range can span from 8.0 cm to 10.5 cm. This variation highlights how specific structures are tuned to the needs of the organism.
