He was a famous librarian and an Italian patriot. Born in Brescello, Italy, in 1797, he studied law at the University of Parma. He later worked as an inspector of schools. Panizzi cared deeply about politics and freedom. He joined a secret group called the Carbonari to fight for change. This group opposed the ruling leaders of that time. Because of his beliefs, he had to leave his home country. He moved to Switzerland and then to London in 1823.

Life in England was a time of new beginnings for him. He first lived in Liverpool for five years. There, he made a living by teaching the Italian language. He also spent much time studying classic books and the poet Dante. In 1826, he met a lawyer named Henry Brougham. This meeting helped Panizzi get a teaching job at London University. By March 1832, he officially became a British citizen. He then began a long career at the British Museum Library. He worked his way up through many different roles. He eventually became the Principal Librarian in 1856.

As the head librarian, Panizzi did amazing work for the world. He helped the library grow from 235,000 books to 540,000 books. This made it the largest library on Earth during his time. He even helped design the famous circular Reading Room. This room was built by architect Sydney Smirke using a sketch by Panizzi. The room opened in 1857 and was very special. Panizzi also created ninety-one new rules for cataloguing books. These rules helped librarians organize collections more clearly. His ideas became the basis for rules used for many years.

Not everyone agreed with Panizzi during his long career. Some people did not want an Italian running a British institution. Others had disagreements about how the library was managed. For example, the historian Thomas Carlyle had a dispute with him. Carlyle complained that a librarian was not being helpful. Panizzi did not forget this slight and later denied Carlyle a private room. Panizzi also fought to make sure publishers sent copies of every book to the library. He believed that everyone should have equal access to learning. He even invented a small pin to stop wooden shelves from wobbling.

In 1869, Queen Victoria made him a knight for his hard work. He received many other honors from different countries too. He was even named a senator in the Italian Parliament in 1868. He died in London on April 8, 1879. Today, the British Library honors him in many ways. They hold annual lectures and even have a room named after him.
