As a boy, Charles sang in a local church choir. He first studied music with his father. His father wanted him to be a tenor, which is a higher male voice. However, when Charles was about seventeen, he chose to sing in the bass clef instead. This meant he became a bass or baritone. He even passed an exam for the Liverpool Philharmonic Society when he was only fifteen.

To become a master, Santley traveled to Italy to study.

In 1855, he went to Milan to learn from a teacher named Gaetano Nava. Nava was a lifelong friend who taught him how to sing and how to speak Italian. This training helped him learn many different roles in operas by composers like Rossini. After his studies, he made his stage debut in Pavia on January 1, 1857. He sang roles in operas like La traviata and Ernani. This training gave him the strong skills he needed for a long career.

He also sang in many famous music festivals in places like Birmingham and Leeds. One of his most famous roles was in the work Elijah, which he performed for over 50 years.

In 1871 and 1872, he went on a large tour to North America and Canada. He sang songs like "To Anthea" and "Maid of Athens" for many people. He was even awarded a gold medal by the Philharmonic Society of London.

Charles Santley's life shows how much hard work can lead to great success. He started as a student in a church choir and became a world-famous star. He did not just sing; he also wrote books to teach others about vocal technique. He shared his knowledge through his memoirs and his writing. Even after he retired from the opera, he continued to sing in many concerts. His career was a bridge between the old traditions of music and the new styles of his time.
