At age five, Aloysius even went to a military camp to train. He spent his early years learning the art of arms.

As he grew, his interests began to change. He spent much time in prayer and reading about saints. After reading about Jesuit missionaries in India, he felt a strong calling. He wanted to become a missionary himself. This was a hard choice for his family. To join the Society of Jesus, he had to give up his wealth.

He even gave up his rights to his family's inheritance. In November 1585, he moved to Rome to join the Jesuits. He took his religious vows in 1587.

In 1591, a serious plague broke out in Rome. This was a time of great sickness for many people. Aloysius decided to volunteer at a hospital for the sick. He helped by carrying people from the streets into the hospital. He washed and fed those who were suffering.

He worked very hard to overcome his own physical discomfort. Even though the work was difficult, he stayed dedicated to helping others. He wanted to make sure the sick were cared for.

Sadly, Aloysius caught the disease while he was working. He became very ill and was bedridden by March 1591. He died on June 21, 1591, just before his 23rd birthday.

Today, Aloysius is remembered as a patron for many different groups. In 1729, he was named the patron saint of youth and students. He is also a patron for those facing serious illnesses. Many schools and colleges carry his name today.
