He lived during the time of Queen Elizabeth I. Southwell belonged to a group called the Jesuits. He was also a missionary who worked in secret. This was a very dangerous job during his time. People look back at him as a significant figure in history. He is remembered for both his faith and his beautiful writing.

His life followed a very specific path of study and service. He was born in Norfolk around the year 1561. After his early years, he went to study in Douai. He also spent time studying in Paris at the College de Clermont. Later, he traveled on foot to reach Rome. He worked hard to join the Society of Jesus. He finally became a member of the Jesuits in 1580. After his studies, he was ordained as a priest in 1584.

In 1586, Southwell began his mission in England. This was a very difficult time for Catholic priests. A law said they could not stay in England for long. He often traveled between different families to help them. He sometimes used a fake name to stay hidden. He lived in London for much of his mission. He even worked as a chaplain for Anne Howard. He wrote many poems while he was living this secret life.

His life changed when he was arrested at Uxendon Hall. A man named Richard Topcliffe was a priest hunter. Topcliffe was responsible for questioning and hurting Southwell. Southwell was held in the Tower of London for three years. He was eventually tried for high treason. The court said he broke laws against the Queen. He told the judges he was not a traitor. He said he only wanted to help people with their faith. He was sentenced to death and died at Tyburn in 1595.

Southwell left behind a great many famous poems.

One very popular book was called Mary Magdalen's Funeral Tears. Another book, St Peter's Complaint, was also very well known. His writing reached many people even outside of his own faith. In 1970, Pope Paul VI named him a saint. He is now one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. His life connects the worlds of religion and literature.
