He was born on September 27, 1696, in a place called Marianella near Naples. His father was a naval officer and a captain. Alphonsus was the oldest of seven children. Even though his family had noble roots, they had become quite poor. He was a very bright student from a young age. He earned a doctorate in law when he was only 16 years old.

Before he became a priest, Alphonsus worked as a successful lawyer. He found that being a lawyer was a very difficult and unhappy job. At age 27, after losing a big case, he decided to change his life. He said he heard an interior voice telling him to leave the world. In 1723, he began studying to become a priest. He was ordained on December 21, 1726, at the age of 30. He spent his early years helping homeless youth in Naples. He used simple words so everyone could understand his preaching. He even started the Evening Chapels to help young people learn.

Alphonsus wanted to reach people who were often forgotten. In 1732, he founded a group called the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. These people are often called Redemptorists. Their main goal was to preach in slums and poor areas. He also traveled to help people after an earthquake in Foggia. During that time, he said he had a vision of the Virgin Mother.

He believed that people should be treated with kindness rather than being punished like criminals. He was a very kind leader who never refused to help those seeking forgiveness.

He was not just a religious leader, but also a very talented artist. Alphonsus was a gifted musician and composer. He wrote a famous Italian Christmas carol called "Tu scendi dalle stelle." This song is often called the "Carol of the Bagpipers." He also wrote many books about how to live a good life. He wrote 111 works on spirituality and theology. His books have been translated into 72 different languages. This shows how many people around the world find his ideas helpful.

Later in life, he was named the Bishop of Sant'Agata de' Goti in 1762. He was a very generous man during this time. He even sold his carriage and his ring to give money to the poor. By 1775, he was very old and had many health problems. He died on August 1, 1787, in Pagani, Italy. The Church later named him a saint in 1839. Today, he is known as the patron saint of confessors. His many books and songs are still used by people all over the world.
