He was a bishop, a saint, and a prolific writer. He was also a talented musician, artist, and lawyer. Liguori lived from September 27, 1696, to August 1, 1787. He is best known for his work in moral theology. This is the study of right and wrong within religious life. His ideas helped shape how many people practice their faith. He is considered the patron saint of confessors.

Liguori was born in Marianella, near Naples. His father, Giuseppe Liguori, was a naval officer. His mother was Anna Maria Caterina Cavalieri. He was the eldest of seven children. Although his family had noble roots, they were somewhat impoverished. Liguori was a very gifted student. He entered the University of Naples at a young age. He earned a doctorate in civil and canon law at age 16.

At that time, his doctor's gown was so large he almost disappeared in it.

Before his religious life, Liguori practiced law. He became a very successful lawyer. However, he found the profession to be full of danger and unhappiness. At age 27, he lost an important legal case. This was the first case he had lost in eight years. Following this, he felt a strong call to change his life. He reported hearing an "interior voice" telling him to leave the world. In 1723, he began his journey toward the priesthood. He was ordained as a priest on December 21, 1726.

Liguori focused his ministry on the marginalized. He spent his early years with homeless and marginalized youth in Naples. He was famous for his plain and simple preaching style. He wanted everyone to understand his messages. He even founded the Evening Chapels to serve young people. By the time of his death, there were 72 such chapels. These centers provided prayer, education, and social activities. They had over 10,000 active participants at the time.

His preaching was very effective at helping people return to their faith.

In 1732, Liguori founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. These members are commonly known as the Redemptorists. A woman named Sister Maria Celeste Crostarosa told him he was chosen for this task. The group's mission was to preach in slums and poor countryside areas. Liguori used this group to oppose a movement called Jansenism. Jansenism was a theological movement that used excessive moral rigorism. Liguori believed people should be treated as souls to be saved. He did not believe they should be treated like criminals to be punished.

Liguori was also a gifted composer and musician. He wrote many popular hymns for the people. One of his most famous works is the Italian carol "Tu scendi dalle stelle." This song is often called the "Carol of the Bagpipers." He originally wrote it in the Neapolitan language. Later, Pope Pius IX translated the lyrics into Italian. His musical style for this piece was known as a pastorale. This connection to the zampogna, or Italian bagpipe, helped make the song very popular.

In 1762, Liguori was appointed Bishop of Sant'Agata de' Goti. He initially tried to refuse the role due to his age and health. Once appointed, he worked to reform the local clergy and the seminary. He was very dedicated to the poor. He even sold his episcopal ring and carriage to give money to those in need. By 1775, his health had declined significantly. He suffered from being deaf and blind. He died on August 1, 1787, in Pagani, Italy.

Liguori's legacy remains very large today. He wrote 111 works on theology and spirituality. His books have seen 21,500 editions and translations into 72 languages. His masterpiece was "The Moral Theology," published in 1748. He developed a system called Aequiprobabilism to balance different moral views. The Church canonized him in 1839. In 1871, Pope Pius IX named him a Doctor of the Church. He is still remembered as a "Prince of Moral Theologians" because of his deep knowledge.
