Born Fernando Martins de Bulhões on August 15, 1195, in Lisbon, Portugal, he became one of the most influential figures in the history of the Franciscan order. He is widely recognized for his profound theological knowledge and his powerful preaching. Because of his impact, he was canonized as a saint by Pope Gregory IX on May 30, 1232, less than a year after his death. Later, on January 16, 1946, Pope Pius XII proclaimed him a Doctor of the Church. This title recognizes his exceptional contribution to religious teaching and wisdom.

Anthony's early life was shaped by his wealthy and noble upbringing in Lisbon.

His family arranged for him to receive an education at a local cathedral school. At age 15, he joined the Canons Regular at the Abbey of Saint Vincent. He later moved to the Monastery of the Holy Cross in Coimbra to study theology and Latin. While there, he was appointed guestmaster at age 19, managing hospitality for the abbey. His life changed when he saw the simple, evangelical lifestyle of the Franciscans. Inspired by the example of five Franciscans killed in Morocco, he left the Canons Regular to join the new Franciscan order. He adopted the name Anthony from a chapel dedicated to Anthony the Great.

His journey to fulfill his vocation was marked by unexpected turns and physical hardship.

After joining the friars, Anthony set out for Morocco to follow his calling. However, he fell seriously ill during the journey. He began a voyage back to Portugal to recover his health, but his ship was pushed off course. The vessel landed in Sicily instead of its intended destination. From Sicily, he traveled through Tuscany and eventually reached a rural hermitage near Forlì in Romagna. Due to his poor health, he often spent time in a private cell carved into a nearby cave. This period of isolation allowed him to focus on intense prayer and academic study.

Anthony's reputation as a brilliant orator grew from a single, unplanned moment in Forlì in 1222.

During an ordination, a misunderstanding occurred between the visiting Dominican friars and the local Franciscans regarding who should preach. The Dominicans were unprepared, and the Franciscan leader called upon Anthony to speak. Although Anthony initially objected, his impromptu sermon deeply impressed the audience. People were moved by his rich voice, his eloquent manner, and his mastery of scripture. This event led to his appointment in the Franciscan province of Romagna and brought him to the attention of Francis of Assisi. Francis eventually entrusted Anthony with the theological studies of the entire order.

Throughout his ministry, Anthony was associated with several remarkable stories and miracles. One tradition suggests he once preached to a crowd of fish in Rimini when people refused to listen. Another story involves a mule that bowed before the Blessed Sacrament to prove a religious truth. There is also a famous account regarding a stolen book of psalms in Bologna. A novice had taken the book, but after Anthony prayed, the thief returned it and rejoined the order. This incident is why many people today pray to Anthony to help recover lost items. These stories highlight his perceived spiritual power and his connection to the everyday struggles of people.

In his later years, Anthony served in high leadership roles and academic positions.

He served as the Provincial superior of northern Italy, based in the city of Padua. He also taught at prestigious institutions like the University of Montpellier and the University of Toulouse. In 1228, he acted as an envoy to Pope Gregory IX. The Pope was so impressed by his preaching that he called him the "Ark of the Testament." He also commissioned Anthony to compile his collection of sermons, known as *Sermones in Festivitates*. These works solidified his status as a premier teacher of the faith.

Anthony's death in 1231 marked the end of a short but intense life. He suffered from ergotism, a type of illness, and died on June 13 at the age of 35.

He was buried in a small church, but the massive Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua was later built to honor him. His influence reached far beyond Europe; for example, the city of San Antonio in Texas was named after him by Spanish missionaries in 1692. Today, he remains a globally venerated figure, remembered as a protector of the poor and a master of the written and spoken word.
