He was born into a wealthy family around the year 1232 or 1233. In his youth, he lived the life of a knight and a poet. However, his life changed completely after he had several visions in 1263. These visions gave him three big goals in life. He wanted to serve God and write a great book. He also wanted to share his faith with people of other religions. To do this, he sold his things and began a life of study.

Llull spent many years learning new things to help his mission. He studied hard in places like the Miramar hermitage. He learned to speak Arabic so he could talk to Muslims. He also read many books in Latin to understand deep ideas.

He wanted to use logic to talk to people of all faiths. He believed that reason could help people understand Christian truths. He even traveled to Tunis to speak with people there. He believed that people should be reached through prayer rather than force.

His most famous creation was a system he called "the Art." This was a way of using logic to prove truths about God.

The Art used a special way of combining ideas. It used letters and shapes to show how different ideas worked together. This made his system look a bit like math or a code. He called his first version the Quaternary Phase from 1274 to 1290. Later, he made a Ternary Phase version in 1290. These systems used diagrams to help people see how divine attributes connected. One idea was that everything has a threefold structure of an agent, a patient, and an act.

Llull was a very busy writer who used many languages. He wrote in Catalan, Latin, and likely Arabic as well. His books were translated into French, Castilian, and Occitan during his life. He even helped get new language classes started at big universities. These schools taught Hebrew, Arabic, and Chaldean to help missionaries.

Even though he lived long ago, his ideas still matter today. Some thinkers say his work was a start for modern computer science. His way of combining things also relates to how computers work. Others see him as a precursor to social choice theory. This is a way of looking at how people make decisions. The Catholic Church also views him as a very holy man. Pope Pius IX named him a blessed figure in 1847.
