Almería has a very special and dry climate. It is actually the driest city in all of Europe. It is also the only city in Europe with a hot desert climate. The sun shines here for about 3,000 hours every year. On average, there are over 320 sunny days in a year. This makes it one of the sunniest places on the continent.

People bought and sold silk, oil, and raisins there. The city even had a large silk industry with hundreds of looms.

This golden age lasted through the 11th and 12th centuries.

History changed for the city in 1147. A group of Christian armies captured the city during a crusade. After that, different rulers took control over the middle ages. The city faced hard times with earthquakes and pirate attacks later on. In the 19th century, people began mining lead in the nearby land. This helped the city grow and trade again.
