This river flows from the west toward the east. The land around the city is a low, fertile plain. People call this area "Europe's orchard." This is because the soil is great for growing many things. Farmers export lots of fruits, vegetables, and flowers from here.

The climate in Murcia is very sunny and warm. It has more than 320 sunny days every year. Summers are very hot, while winters stay mild. Sometimes the area gets heavy, sudden rain. The Segura River has flooded the city many times. It flooded in 1651, 1879, 1946, and 1948. To help, people built a levee to stop the water.

Over many centuries, different groups ruled the city. In the 12th century, the Almohades ruled southern Spain. Later, the Christian king Ferdinand III made Murcia a protectorate in 1243.
