The area is quite dry and does not have permanent rivers. Instead, there are stream beds called ramblas that only flow sometimes. There is also a small island called Tabarca. It sits 8 nautical miles south of the city in the sea. One very special spot is the City Hall. The stairs there mark the zero point for measuring height in Spain.

People have lived in this area for a very long time. Some hunter-gatherer tribes moved here over 7,000 years ago. Later, Greek and Phoenician traders visited the coast. They brought new things like the alphabet and pottery wheels. In the mid-230s BC, a general named Hamilcar Barca built a fortified settlement here. After the Carthaginians, the Romans ruled the area for over 700 years. The town was known as Lucentum during that time. Later, the Moors ruled the region until the 13th century.

Alicante has a long history of trading goods. In the past, the city exported rice, wine, and olive oil. It also sent out oranges and wool. The city has faced many hard times too. During the Spanish Civil War, the city saw heavy air bombings. In 1939, a British ship called the SS Stanbrook helped rescue thousands of families. In more recent years, the city changed again. In the 1950s and 1960s, tourism began to grow very fast. This brought many new businesses like hotels and restaurants to the coast.
