This Islamic city featured an almost rectangular floor plan. It was protected by a walled perimeter built between the late 10th and early 11th centuries. Following the Mudéjar Revolt, Aragonese forces conquered the area for Castile. The Sentence of Torrellas in 1304 and the Treaty of Elche in 1305 settled the rule in favor of the Crown of Aragon. The modern era brought significant industrial and social changes to Elche. In the 19th century, the arrival of the railway helped the city grow.
