The geography of the region is defined by the Segura River. The river flows from west to east across an alluvial plain. This plain is called the Vega Media del Segura. It is part of a Mediterranean pluvial system. The landscape is dominated by the "huerta," or orchard. This fertile area is often called "Europe's orchard." This nickname comes from its long history of growing fruits, vegetables, and flowers. These products are grown there and then exported to other places. The city is surrounded by various landscapes. These include badlands, pine groves, and semi-steppe regions.
Water management is essential to the local environment. The Segura River has a small volumetric flow most of the time. However, it is known for occasional flooding. The city was inundated in 1651, 1879, 1946, 1948, 1973, and 1989. To manage this risk, a levee was constructed.
Murcia has a deep history of human habitation. People lived in this municipality during the Bronze and Iron Ages. The Argaric people occupied parts of the area during the late Chalcolithic and Bronze Age. Later, the Iberians lived there. One important archaeological site is the De la Luz Iberian Sanctuary. During the Roman era, people also left traces of their presence. One example is the Castillo de los Garres, a late Roman fortress.
The city was officially founded in AD 825. Abd ar-Rahman II, the Emir of Córdoba, founded it as Madinat Mursiyah.
Political shifts changed the city many times. The Almohades conquered Murcia in 1172. Later, the Christian Reconquista moved into the region. In 1243, King Ferdinand III of Castile made Murcia a protectorate through the Treaty of Alcaraz.
The city has faced significant challenges throughout the centuries. Prosperity declined when Mediterranean trade shifted to ocean routes. However, the city flourished again in the 18th century due to a silk industry boom. This era produced many of the city's modern landmarks.
