The weather in Oviedo is called a maritime climate. This means it feels like the seaside because it is near the Bay of Biscay. High mountains help protect the city from strong winds. These mountains are Monte Naranco in the north and the Sierra del Aramo in the south.

Oviedo has a very old and interesting history. Long ago, the land where the city sits was empty. Two monks named Máximo and Fromestano are said to have founded it in 761. They built a small church for Saint Vincent. Later, the city became a capital for the Kingdom of Asturias.
